Image-Based Authentication for Mobile Web Security

Image-based authentication easily and securely authenticates users accessing online accounts from their mobile devices – whether they are accessing the account using a mobile web browser or an application on the mobile device.

Mobile Web Authentication

For example, when a consumer is accessing their bank account using their smartphone, it can be difficult to type a long username and alphanumeric password on the tiny phone keyboard. Image-based authentication is an easier approach because the user only needs to touch/tap images on the phone’s display screen. At the same time, it’s more secure because it creates a one-time password every time.

How it works:

  1. The first time the user registers with a website, service or application, they will select a few categories of things they can easily remember.
  2. Each time authentication is required – such as at login or to authorize a transaction – the user is presented a randomly-generated grid of images.
  3. The user looks for the pictures that fit their pre-chosen secret categories and taps/touches the appropriate pictures on the display to authenticate.

The specific pictures and their location on the grid are different each time, forming a unique, one-time authentication code every time. All the user needs to do is remember a few categories and look for pictures that fit those categories.

Our image-based authentication technology can be used in combination with the username & password or as a standalone authentication solution. It increases security by adding the one-time password every time.

1.    Create a temporary username and password for use in the demo, then select several categories of images that you can remember.

2.    You’ll then be able to practice logging into a mock mobile banking application using the username/password as the first layer of authentication and the image-based solution as a second layer of authentication that adds a one-time access code for increased security.
