Secure Logins Using One-Time Passwords

Internet users often choose weak passwords that are easy to guess or compromise through brute-force attacks. In fact, 20% of the population share the top 5,000 most common passwords. The single most common password online is 123456. Weak passwords threaten security not only for the individual user account, but also for the entire website and the business behind it. Once an attacker has access to user accounts, it can lead to widespread fraud and further security breaches.

Confident ImageShield™ can be used as a second layer of authentication in addition to the username and password. It strengthens the security of the login by adding a one-time password to the existing login credentials. Confident ImageShield can strengthen the security of a login by more than 99.999% and protects the account even if the user chose a weak password or had their password compromised.

How it works:

1. The first time a user registers with a website or application, they establish their username and password. They will also select a few categories they can easily remember – such as people, flowers and clocks.

2. To login, the user enters their username and password. Next, they are presented with a randomly-generated grid of images – the Confident ImageShield.

3. The user identifies the images on the grid that fit their chosen categories and types the corresponding characters to form a one-time password or PIN.

The specific pictures that appear on the grid and their alphanumeric characters are different each time. In this way, Confident ImageShield adds a unique access code to each login session, yet all the user needs to remember are a few simple categories. Confident ImageShield makes the login secure even if the user chose a weak password or uses the same password on other websites.

Even if the user has keystroke-logging malware installed on their machine or had their password compromised in some way, an attacker would not be able to log in to the account because they would not know the user’s secret categories.
